Back To School Supplies

The following article discusses the following topics:  back to school supplies, back to school supplies sales, back to school supply, back to school supply list and cheap back to school supplies.

Every child need back to school supplies when returning for the school year.

Every year before school starts, parents dutifully head to their local discount store to find a list of school supplies their children will need. When you’re buying school supplies, "Why so many?" is a question you’re likely to ask.

I remember when I was going to public school. Granted it was more than a couple of years ago, but that’s neither here nor there. My mom took us to the store to get a few items that we’d need, namely pencils, glue, and crayons. If you’ve seen a child’s school supply list lately, the list has grown exponentially.

Here's a common school supply list for an elementary student in my county; amounts required per student vary by school. Each school system will have their own list of supplies, so you’ll have to see what your school requires.

  • Art supplies: glue stick, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, markers, water color paints, pencils (usually two dozen), pencil sharpener, and easer
  • Notebooks (spiral and/or composition)
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Folders to contain classroom handouts
  • Three ring binders to contain loose leaf paper
  • Plastic school box to hold the student's supplies
  • Copy Paper
  • Index cards to help make flash cards, learning games, or for organizing writing ideas
  • Miscellaneous school supplies: tissues, scotch tape, zip lock bags, “magic rub” erasers, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer

As your student progresses through their education, the supply list may expand or be reduced. Your child will need a book bag, physical education uniforms, and calculators or other items for higher math.

Now, it's understandable that some of these items would be needed, but in some schools the teacher takes up all the supplies at the beginning of the year and doles them out as they are used up. If you have to purchase the items, shouldn’t your child be able to keep the items at home until they need to replace them?

We've all heard that school systems around the country are in dire need of financial help, that they are underfunded. This is a large reason why schools ask the parents to supply items that are needed in the classroom - more than what the child will actually use. Unfortunately, when the school year is over, there may be supplies left over that may be discarded rather than saved for the next year.

There’s no doubt that the nation’s economy has a trickle-down effect that reaches into our schools. No one denies that there are schoolchildren that cannot buy school supplies and need help to meet their basic educational requirements. However, some parents feel the amount of supplies they have to buy goes more to needy students rather than their own.

No one wants any child to do without back to school supplies. And while parents look forward to children going back to school, they dread having to buy school supplies. "Why so many?" they wonder.
