Interview with Leona Griffin- Search Engine Optimization Specialist

Sodamail: What exactly is search engine optimization?

Leona: search engine optimization is simply ensuring that your site meets the necessary requirements within the search engine algorithms to position well with or better than your competitors.

Sodamail: What can a site owner do to help with his/her search engine ranking?

Leona: There are various factors that go into ranking well in a search engine. The two main things that a site owner can do to rank well is to:

A) Create good, quality content for your site that talks about your products, services and utilize your most important content within your site.

B) Tell people about your site. Submit your site to industry related directories, DMOZ.org and network with other site owners within your field/industry.

Sodamail: What about meta tags? Are they still important?

Leona: There are mixed feelings about just how much your meta tags help you with regards to your search engine rankings. I always recommend optimizing your meta tags to ensure that if they are counted you are ready. If they aren’t counted with a specific engine, then it won’t hurt you.

Sodamail: When selecting a search engine optimization specialist; what qualities should one look for?

Leona: Below are some of the qualities I would look for:

• Ensure that the SEO specialist is being upfront. If you are asking to be positioned in a sea of millions of competitors; that specialist should tell you upfront what you can expect.

• Always talk to them and try to gain an understanding of what their qualifications are; if they talk about heavily guarded search engine secrets, it’s garbage; there are simply no secrets.

• There are processes which we all follow, before signing on with a search engine specialist; be sure you trust them with your business.

• Ask them to see ranking reports of their existing clients; ask for phone numbers and references.

• Look and see if they’ve had clients for the long haul; if the majority of their clients were gained within the last 2 months, chances are-they’re a fly by night company.

Quality search engine optimization specialists will only enhance your search engine rankings and will carefully explain their processes as well as assist you with your expectations.
