Add Diagnosis
Last week, I was reading an article; and jokingly a guy
mentioned a little stereotype about people with ADD and I
totally related to exactly what he said. I thought to
myself, that is me all the way. Then I stopped for a
second and thought well maybe I'll look up ADD symptoms in the
search engines and see what I could find.
I located an online test that you could take to see how many of
the symptoms you had of ADD. It was a 20 question quiz and
it said if you answered yes to more than 10, you are likely to
have ADD. I answered 18 yes. Whoa! What?
I was blown away. I just thought I was lazy, crazy and
without motivation. I had no idea that I may actually have
a problem someone other than myself could possibly solve.
So I called my doctor up and said I'd like to schedule an
appointment for a possible ADD diagnosis. they scheduled
me for this week.
Wednesday March 29th I went into the office, they started taking
my temperature and my blood pressure, I said, "all this for
ADD?" She said, "ADD? I have you down as having a
UTI!" We both giggled and she took off the blood pressure
cuff and said the doctor would be right in. Well you know
the doctor didn't come right in. Doctors never come right
in. Eventually she came in and she brought some
papers with her. She started to ask me why I thought I may
have ADD. I told her my stories, about the article, the
test I took online etc. She said okay, well I'll give you
these papers that have a questionnaire on them and I would like
you to fill them out. Again, answering these
questions, felt like enlightenment. With each question, I
would say, "yes, that's exactly how I felt, or yes! that
is exactly what I am experiencing." About ten minutes
later she came back in and reviewed my answers.

The doctor looks at my answer sheet and says well it
says you have it if you answer over 40% yes, and you've
answered over 80% yes. She then started to explain
to me that normally they treat people with ADD by using
medication. She then said she wanted me to try
Ritalin. As soon as she said that it felt like
someone said a foul word. I said, "Ritalin?"
You see, I have read exactly what people write about
things like this. Not only that but my opinionated
mother has commented on Ritalin and other ADD drugs
countless times. Saying that kids are walking
around all drugged up. They look half dead and
that they are dying by taking this drug. I decided
that if my doctor thinks it can help me, I was going to
try it, no matter what.
So I call my husband and I said that I did have
ADD and my doctor gave me medication for it. He
seemed like I said I had a dreadful disease or there was
a reason to be upset. I had to explain to him that
this is a good thing, I'll give the medication a try and
see if it helps me.
